I almost didn't go...Three Keys to an Emotionally Healthy Life

If you’re interested in learning more about all three keys to unlock your emotional intelligence the Unlock Your EQ assessment will help. Learn more about it here

I almost didn’t go.

But I found myself singing along to “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and The Beast while waiting on a bleacher for Special Olympics to start for my son Gabriel.

It’s been a full past 3 weeks and I just wanted to do nothing on my day off. I contemplated my options and then remembered to base my decision on my values. What’s important? For me it’s faith, family and fulfillment.

The third key to an emotionally healthy life is living out of your values, on purpose. Showing up for Gabriel to compete in bocce ball was so fun. And it was a decision based on my value of family. I deduced that while it was my day off I’d have some time to myself as well thus allowing me to live into the fulfillment, which I define as doing what I want and what brings me joy. As a single mom, it’s easy for my life to revolve around the boys and work.

Emotional intelligence helps us make value-based decisions.

First, we must identify our values.

In scripture we hear several values of Jesus.  One is love over condemnation.  (John 3:16-17). Another is liberation. Jesus in Luke 4:18 speaks to that saying, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed".

What would you say are three of your core values? What values actually shape your life?

Knowing your values helps you to make aligned decisions. When you do, that feeling is peace and wholeness. I regret less when I make values-based decisions.

Action Brings Clarity

  • Consider your values. Write them down or in a memo app. Review them. Assess if they are core to you. If not, edit and rewrite them until you identify the ones that feel right for you.

  • If you’d done values exercises before, assess how well you’re living into them. When was the last time you made a decision based on your values? What did that feel like?

  • Apply your values to a current situation or decision you’re wanting to make.

By the way, Gabriel's team placed third in bocce ball. His buddy was awesome! The host school was so welcoming. I'm glad I didn't miss out on such a memorable day for him!
